What is Autism and What I have learned so far as a parent to a child with Autism

ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is a complicated disability that affects verbal and social skills in children and adults. Autism is a VERY wide spectrum that is unique to each individual with this disability. The importance of being educated and building a support network for yourself, as a mother, becomes key to having a healthy relationship with your child and maintaining your own self care, which I understand the struggle all too well.

I am a mother of a child with Autism. My son Charlie, 5 years old, is a very special, talented and unique little boy. He faces all challenges with courage and resilience and I couldn’t be more proud to be his mother. I have learned so many things from Charlie as well as the support network I am still building for us. I have had to learn patience, not just for Charlie, but patience with myself as well because at times when I felt lost, it really helped me to remind myself that I am learning and growing with my son and that’s okay. I’m still working on learning to be patient with myself. Some days I have it together and things seem to operate smoothly. I feel productive and calm ready to tackle the next challenge. Other days it feels like chaos. The house is an impossible mess to clean, Charlie and his baby brother are triggering one another, there’s errands to run, schedules to keep, meals to prep, the list goes on…

It’s hard to be patient with yourself on those days mama, trust me I know. Remind yourself of the battles you have fought and won to get to where you are now is the proof of exactly how beautiful, fierce, brave and strong you are! Remind yourself that your facing a lot of challenges that only a parent with a child with a disability could understand. Accepting that your not always going to have it together, that some days your going to be emotional and overwhelmed and exhausted and nothing is going to get done and that’s okay, love. Breathe deeply.

My hope, that by sharing my story, it may help to connect struggling moms into a strong supportive community where we can all share our experiences and the things we have learned along the way. My wish is for a judgment free, kind and loving platform for all. We are the fiercest warriors and our children’s strongest advocates. Let’s work together to spread awareness and positivity to make the world a better place for our little ones!

Thank you for reading ♥️ Sending all the love and healing to each and every one of you.
